It is a phrase from “Darkling Thrush” by Thomas Hardy, who died in 1928, and whose heart was removed before his cremation and, as it goes, placed on his sister’s kitchen table to await interment in Stinsford, his hometown, when her cat snatched the heart and disappeared with it into the woods.
